I Scoutfng along the beach near the old whaling station, south of Cape Kidnappers, Mr. D. Williams, gannet sanctuary ranger, found some interesting Maori curios, including two well-preserved hone fishhooks. Designed in a U-shape the fishhooks were" each a little | . more than one inoh from tip to j bend, and had carefully-executed sharp barbs. Mr. Williams also found a larger hook, hut this, being hewn from porous bone, had not weathered as well as the smaller hooks. Other articles found in the area were a fishing barb, a bone needle about l-J-in. in length, a broken pendant carved from bone, and a partlyt completed stone chisel.
