Filling Of Metal Pit Rouses Lively Discussion
Which- of two inetal pits wi'.hih the borough should rec.eive - priority in an all out fiHing-in. project; the Tiro Tiro Road pit or 'that which fronts the . f uture ' sit'e Of the new miaternity • hospital plan-^ ned in Bath Street. At last 'night's meeting of the Levin Borough Council, when this matter was discussed, the works committee- -in its report recommended that the Tiro Tiro Road pit be completod before tipping began in the Bath Street pit. *- Opposing sueh a move, Cr. A. J. H. Allen strongiy advocated that work in the future be 'concen'.rated on the Bath Street pit' and every effort made to encourage persons to use it, particu arly commercial carriers. "The. committee is taking the wrong attitude. It seems to want to put off the evil day," said Cr. Allen. . ■> It had been suggested 'at the last meeting, said Cr, Allen, that it woui'd take 12 monihs to fill up the Tiro Tiro Road pit. "1 1 say you'll be lucky to fi!l it up in two years at the rate you're going. That would mean ihat it would be iwo years before a start is made on the Bath Street , pit." ' Cr. Allen added that he was not sp&aking without obtaining an ant.horitativft vifw. it had to be
kept in mind that the maternity , home would be facing the Bath Street pit and the quicker wprk began there the better. There was any. amount of good building spoil, stones and soil available in the borough and this shou 'd be dumped there to help consolidate the other material. Iu w.as .adinitieA ^ thalc . rpateriai of a suitable purpose was necessary but this would be required to fi.l in the Tiro Tiro Road pit, said the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekih. One couid not fill in a pit with just one variety of rubbish. The latter pit was infested with rats and it was an urgent matter to complete its filling. He did not know if Cr. Allen's aulhority ha'd taken into consideration the large number of new houses and the increased population in the borough of late. This would mean more and more. rubbish becoming available. There was enough rubbish being tipped in the Ohau Rive'r to fil the Bath Sireet pit, said Cr. Allen, and the Horo whenua County Council would probably be taking steps to stop it being tipped there. He added that if it was not for the' tipping fee imposed that rubbish would find its way to the borough tips. The Mayor said that the commiltee had spent half an hour discussing every aspect of the case .and had deeided on the Tiro Tiro Road pit as the first one to attend to. Cr. Allen: It seems then thai mine- is a voice in the wilderness. "Yours is not quite a voice in the wilderness," said Cr. R. S.' Antcliff. "I appreciate the point of view that it is no use filling in half of one pit and half of another, but I feel it is high time that the Bath Street pit was started." Cr. R. A. Frederikson said that a solution might be to open the Bath Street pit for registered carriers only. Cr. C. Sherwood commented that filling in • two pits at the one time would get the councL nowhere. The filling in of a pit must be done to plan and under supervision. The Tiro Tiro Road pit was" being filled * in under supervision and it might be that after it had been completed a suitable arrangement might be ma'de with the person there to supervise the Bath Street pit. The Mayor said he agreed that grea.t care would be necessary with the Bath Street pit as it was in the centre of the borough. - When put to vote, the committee's recommendation that the Tiro Tiro Road pit receive priority was carried. 1
