Works Department engineers on the "Maraetai power scheme are confident they will fulfil Mr Semple 's promise to have the fir'st unit of the hydro-electrie station working by tlie end crf 1951. The other four units should then come intc. operation progressively. Mr A. E. Clark, project enginrier fm the Waikato scheme, said today thal the overeoming of the seepage into^th river bed where the foundation of th dam will be laid, had been more suc cessful than they dared hope. The wa ter level was now 40 feet below .t'n the original river level and the pump ing had been done without difficulty T-he work had gone ahead pracHcall; without a hitch. The heavy rock exca vations were proeeeding. . The" engineers hope to start soon ful] scale work on the Whakamaru hydrc electric- station, No date is fixed.
