Otaki Institute's August Meeting
The monthly meeting of the Otaki Women's Institute took place recently, Mrs. J. Ross presiding over the'usual good attendance. The arts an'd crafts show to be held on October 12 was freely discussed, while an invitation is to be sent to Milson institute to attend the Otaki institute's meeting in November. Invitations to birthdays at Tasman Beach, Waikanae and Manakau were received. MeSdames T. W. Synnott and N. Radcliffe were appointed to be delegates to the Dominion Federation conference. A letter was read from an English institute to which a parcel had been sent. It was reported that 'the drama eircle was to stage a concert in the Civic Theatfe on November 16. Competition winners were as follows: — Flower:' Mrs. J. Mudge 1, H. T. Mould 2. Shrub: Mrs Mudge 1, Mrs. *• H. Mathie 2, Scones: Mrs. S. Brooks • 1, Mrs Mould 2. ' Covered coat hangers: Mrs. Mathie 1, Mrs. Brooks 2. Mrs. R. Duncan demonstrated the decorating of fruit cakes, Which proved very interesting. A vote of thanks was accorded her and she was presented with a floral gift. Competitions for October will be best flower or . shrub, Christmas gift from organdie, and eggless gingerbread, made from the following recipe: — i lb. butter or cooking fat, 1 teacup each sugar, milk and syrup, 2 breakfast cups flour, 1 dessertspoon ginger, 1 small teaspoon baking powder, 1 small teaspoon baking soda. Dissolve sugar, syrup, butter and soda in milk then add flour and baking powder. Bake in meat tin about 35 minutes. Hostesses for October were appointed as follows: — Mesdames D. Blake, A. B. Boyd, V. Bertlesen, S. Brooks, G. Chittick and E. J. Cook.
