Memorial Trophy Presented For Cricket

, ^ r On December 8, 1936, a young Shannon , cficketer - made local cricket history when he secured six wickets with a six-ball over on the -Shannon, Domain. The ' batsmen he sent back to the pavilioij were all Hawke Cup representatives engaged in a friendly match against the home eleven. Five were elean toowled and one went out l.b.w. . 'The bowler who performed this feat was Douglas G. Mercer and to mark the occasion his fellow memhers presented him with a ' handsome cup. However, like so many other young sportsmen, Doug. Mercer paid the supreme sacrifice in World War II, having died of wounds at Cassino in 1944. • At the recent annual general meeting of the Shannon Cricket Club, Mr. George Hampson, uncle of the late Doug. Mercer, donated the cup, which will be known as the D. G. Mercer Memorial Trophy, to the club with the suggestion that it he offered to the Horowhenua Cricket Association as^a challenge cup. The local club has pleasure in accepting the trophy and representations will be made .by its delegates to the association for its acceptance by that body. The trophy will, be a welcome addiiion .to the association's competition and should help to better the sport in the district and serve as a fitting memorial to a brilliant young sportsman.
