Sensational Round At Golf Championships
HASTINGS, Sept. 12.' The New Zealand open golf championships for 1949 opened on a sensational note at the Bridge Pa ' links, Hastings, today when the' Manakau (Auckland) axnateur, G. E. Revell, iecorded the lowest score in the history of the event with a phenomenal rouna of 66 heating A. J. Shaw's pfevious record tally of 67 set up at Shirley, Christ church in 1931. Revell leads the open field after the first round which occupied all ,of today, by two strokes, the next best card hemg a 68 returned by the Whangarei professional, James Galloway, who won the Hawke's Bay professional title at Waiohike last week. Five other players earded 69 and altogether 40 competitors equalled or bettered the standard scratch seore for the course which is 73. This remarkable field day for thp players against their old enemy bogey, clearly indicated that in sbch beautiful weather and with the course in perfect conditio'n as it was today, the Hastings links is a happy hunting ground for anv topclass player who can drive' a reasonably long ball and keep it straight. Ninety-eight amateurs and 22 profes•^ionals participated in the first round ..of the open today and the seven best cards -recorded were as follow: — , * Denotes Professionals. G. E.
