Safe Yields £80 to Thieves
WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. Thieves escaped with £70 to £80 in notes and silver when they blew the safe in the Gear Meat Company's shop, Petone, at about 10 o'clock last night. Entry was gained through a side door. Gelignite was used, and the safe was damaged beyond repair. Coats belonging to stalf members were used to deaden the noise of the explosion in the office, which opens on to Jackson Strcet. Tt is understood that nearby resi dents heard the detonation, but did not assoeiate it with burglars. Mr. Bert Harvey discovered the theft •at 7.30 this morning when he arrived to comnienee work. Mr. A. Twist, who is in charge of the office, said today ; that it was not usual to keep money in the safe overnight, but an exeeptiona) rush of cnstomers late on Friday afternoon left no alternative. The usual late banking had been made of about £750. The explosion caused damage to.; books and scattered a confusion oL papers throughout the office. There wasj sufficient gelignite left on the premisesto- "load" several more safes.
