Fines And Penalties In Otaki Court

A short sitting of the Police Court at Otaki on Friday was presided over by Messrs: F. H. Critchley and H. J. Fell, J's.P. Driving at an excessive speed through Paraparaumu township cost a taxi driver, V. W. Cave, £1 and costs, and failing to keep to the left when leaving the township brought a further fine of £3 and costs. Inspector R. B. Doggett prosecuted for the Transport Department. 1 Inspector C. L. Davis charged John Richards with driving through Otaki at an excessive speed. Defendant pleaded guilty and • was convicted and fined £1 10s, with 12s costs. v The Benson Carrying Coy., Wellington, was charged by Inspector Davis with having no rear vision mirror. A conviction and fine of £1 10s, with 12s costs, was entered. Chung Wah, who produced a warrant of fitness which had long since expired, was charged by Inspector Davis with having no current warrant, and was convicted and fined £1, with 10s costs. Arising out of a collision at Otaki Railway when the car she was driving demolished a telegraph pole in Arthur Street, Isabel Jean Davies pleaded guilty by letter to a charge by the police of driving without due care and attention. Evidence furnished testified that defendant had realised too late that she had to make the turn, and the collision was the result. She had her husband and two children as passengers. Fortunately no one was hurt. A conviction and fine of £3 10s was entered, costs were 12s. Called out at 12.30 a.m. on July 31, Inspector Davis told the court that a car had torn 25 feet of railing off the Otaki Bridge, and the car had been "lifted bodily off its four wheels" as a result of the impa'ct. The driver had admitted that he "was driving too fast and could not pull up in time." The offender, John Joseph McCarthy, was fined £5. Costs were 10s. "We have listened carefully to all the evidence and we have no alternative but to dismiss the case," commented the Bench after hearing a case brought by Inspector Davis against M. L. Lochore of wilfully obstructing tfaffic. Mr. B. H. Rhodes anneared for defendant.
