Norway Shows Way To N.Z.
LONDON, Sept. 12. " I see no reasou why, by making use C'f hv lro-eleetric jiower, New Zealand slionld not develop industrially on the same lines as Norway and Sweden. Tiiere is a strong siniilarity between Norwav aml New Zealand, partieularly on the west Ooast of the Houth Island, a.'nl we should be able to develop I: '•taliurgieal and other industries as Ihe Norwegians have done, " said Mr. Tiioinas Aeland, of ('hristchureh, a li't'inber of the American Institute of Met-hanieal Engineers, who has just '■•uicluileil a tour of Norwegian and Sivedish indtistrial plauts after couipieting a three yiars' metallurgical course at Sheffield University. Mr. Aeland said the Swedes and Norwegians had developed a technique for extracting iron from iron sands of the type found in New Zealand and the Norwegians had built up an export trade in vanadiuni which could profitablv lie extracted from New Zealand sands. During his period of study in Britain, Mr. Aeland, who served overseas with the New Zealand Engineers during the war, was elected a moniber of the British Iron and Steel Institute and a niember of the Sheffield Institute of Metallurgical Engineers. He is returning shortly to New Zealand.
