Tlie hop-picking season is now in full swing in Kent, tuni upwards of 40,000 Loinioners who every year cotnhine business with pleasure by spending tlieir nnmi'il holiday in the hop fields, are coinpleting the harvest. Oue resuit of the drv season has been that the hops have been mueh sinaller than usual, and this has led to eomplalnfs among the piekers, 4000 of whoni earlier tliis week staged a onedav strike until their deniand for lugher wnges was eoneeded by the lirewery coinpanies, who own a ma.jority oi' the hop fields. The hop yield has also been badlv affeeted in sonie areas by wilt disease. M any London families go every year to the hop fields, bundling their eamping gear into babies' prams and taking along elderly members to look after the sniall children. At present rates of pay, niost of the piekers make between £12 and £1.1 each for three weeks ' work, during which they are fed and Itoused on the hop iields.
