■ ■■ Mr. A. R. Cutler Opens. Otaki Society's Fixture ' The chief guests at the Otaki Horicultural Society's spring show on .Friday were the Australian High Commissioner, Mr. A. R. Cutler, V.C., who performed the oflicial opening ceremony, and Mrs. Cutler. , 8 , There was a large attendance when the ceremony took Dlace. The president, Mr. J. G. MacKenzie, welcomed those present and thanked growers for their support, the committee on the successful outcome of its efforts, the Women's Institute garden circle and all who had helped in the organisation of the show. He expressed the hope that Otaki's promised nCw hall was not far distant, as he 'felt that would mean further successes for the society. Mr. MacKenzie then called on the Mayor, Mr. C. F. Atmore, to introduce Mr. Cutler. Mr. Atmore expressed his pleasure at being asked to introduce Mr. and Mrs. Cutler, the former having achieved the highest personal honour a nation could ■bestow on him. Mr. Atmore commented that Mr. Cutler was a New South Welshman, and that a former New South Welshman in Samuel Marsden had in 1801 brought plants to New Zealand. The speaker assured the visitors that Otaki was doing a worthwhile jqb in growing produce and helping to feed the people of the Capital City, as the district was well endowed by nature with a suitable climate and soil. He had much pleasure in extending a warm welcome and hoped Mr. and Mrs. Cutler would enjoy their short visit. Mr. Cutler was greeted with applause on rising to speak, an'd ■ made mention of the fact that his wife was a descendant- of Samuel Marsden. Both he' and Mrs. Cutler were greatly impressed i by the love of the garden ex-l hibited by New Zealanders. It I did much for the health of the 1 people, he said, The friendliness and hospitality of New Zealanders was very noticeable, Mr. Cutler continued. He considered this hospitality was engendered and moulded by the New Zealander's love for the garden, and said that if a man could add a touch of colour and beauty to his street through his garden he would be a better / citizen for so doing.
