The Fear of the Adverse Vote
SYDNEY, Sept. 11. "Though December 10 has been tentatively fixed as the date of the Election, Mr. Chifley may decide on a different date because of the difficulty of arranging a simultaneous date with New Zealand," says the Sunday Telegeaph's Canherra correspondent. "Both the Chifley and Fraser Governments fear the local effect of an adverse Labour vote in the other country. In the past few days Mr. Chifley and. Mr. Fraser have exchanged views on election dates hut Mr. Fraser has not "been able to make up his mind. Reports reaching Canherra suggest that a Lahour defeat is widely expected in New Zealand. "Government observers say that . Mr. Chifley, Mr. Fraser and Mr. Attlee have conferred on election dates and that an understanding has been reached whereby Australia and New Zealand should synehronise election dates and Britain should not hold an election until' after that date."
