Ambitious Plans For King Country Maori Land
NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 5. Plans are afoot to develop about 500,000 acres of Maori tribal lands in the central King Country. Initial difficulties have been ironed out at conferences between Government offieials and leaders of ihe Tuwharetoa tribe. Tlie long-term progrannne is one of the most ambitious yet eontemplated in New Zealand. Areas will be developed gradualiy and the work will be accelerated as suitable trac'tors and other implements become available. Besides bringing idle lands into production, the promoters have as their objective the rehabilitation of Maori ex-servicemen anu other suitable meiubers of tlie Maori race. Contractors are worlcing on the Kuratau, Pukawa and Korohe ^areas, near Tokaanu, and in the near future it is intende£ to start on some of the Taupo blocks.
The land will be used mainly for dairying and sheop farming, but some of the areas will be afforested. Part of the pla^i is to have Maoris released from emplovment in neighbouring sawmills, for most of tliein are benefieiaries. Leaders of tho tribe will act as an advisory conncil. The tribal area commenees at the Waikato Rivor, midway -between Rotorua and Taupo, and extends through Manunui and "Kakahi so as to incluue pll the Tokaanu area. To assist the general plan, the Maoris will have sawmills erected. These will be under their own control to provide timber for housiug and othor farm ixnproveinents*
