Eeceived Wednesday, 11.46 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 7. Mr. Attlee, addressing the Trades Union Congress at Bridlington, .said he did not believe in lowering wages as a nxeans of reducing costs. "I believe efficient work can only be got by paying adequate wages but to reduee costs does mean that both employers and employea must seek in every way to attain the highest degree of efficiency. Our standard of life, and. our sfbility to maintain full employnlent depend on our bemg able to maintain a flow of imports oi foodstuffs and raw materials, a considerable proportion of which must come from dollar sources.. To pay for these things we must be able to produce goods at competitive priees. It is therefore vital that we should reduce costs by greater efficiency. Intfreased demands for wage rises when there is no increase of production to meet them, lead straight to inflation."
