Another Baby Dead At Migrant Centre
SYDNEY, Sept. 6. Another baby, aged nine months, died today in the Bathhurst immigratiou centre, of extreme malnutrition, bringing the migrant baby death toll to 15. The Minister of Health, Senator MeKenna has annoiipced that he and the Minister of Jmmigration, Mr Calwell, ordered an investigation of the'case histories.of all children admitted to the Albury and Bonegilla Hospitals. The Commonwealth authorities claim that all 12 babies who dicd at the Albury District ITospital. and 25 others who are suffering from mai nutrition, were brougivt to Australia in three foreign owned vessels, two of them Ttalian. The Director-Genera! of Health, Dr. H. Metcalfe, denies a charge that hospital aecommodation at the Bonegilla migrant camp is inadequate. Dr. .T. van Leent told the press today that an epidemic of infectious diseases [which swept through the Bathurst mig- ' rant transit camp in May and June was inevitable beeause of the crowded lconditions and later beeause of the coal strike which held up clearance of migi yants.
