No Progress With Tb. Check Of Immigrants
AUCKLAND, Sept. 5. GonCern that no progress had been inade by the Health Department in ensuring that immigrants were free from tubere'ulosis before embarking for New Zealand, was expressed by the Auckland Hospital Board in a resolution. carried tonight. The board -decided, io ask for an assurance that immediate, steps would be taken to" provide ade quate safeguards. The board protested to the Department against the laek of examination of immigrants, last April and suggested that 110 person wliether ari. assisted im migrant or otherwise, should be allowed to embark unless he or she had an X-rqy examination within the previwis two months. The board also suggest,ed that regulations should be made ensuring a more thorough examination of immigrants when tliey landed and that eonsideration should also be given to visitors and tourists. The Director-Gen-eral of Health, Dr. T. E. Eitehie, advised a f'ew days later that the vvhole questiou was being investigated and that the Britisli Ministry of Health was examining the position. In repiy to a further letter sent by the board last month, Dr. Eitehie stated that the Ministry of Health had not yet given any information of their further inves tigations.
