Gaol Promised Drunken Drivers
♦ DUNEDIN, Sept. 5. Unless the circumstances were unusual motorists eonvicted of being intoxicated in charge of motor-cars would in future run a very grave risk of being gaoled, said Mr. J. D. Willis, S.M., in what he described as a "linal warning" in the Magistrate's Court thih morning. Mr Willis quoted figures showing that during J94S there were 39 convictions in Dunedin Courts for thit offence, while Auckland with a population three times as great, had only 43. The figures for Wellington and Christchurch, each twice as large as Dunedin were only 35. For tlie 19 ] months ended July 31 of this year the I figure for Dunedin was 51 compared with Auckland 64, Wellington 63, and Christchurch 54. "The figures sliow the scandaious state of affairs in this city, " he sanl. "It will not be tolerated any longer. have repeated ad nausenm that driv ers cuivicted of this offence are for tunate that tliey do not appear in Court on a manslaughter charge. ' '
