What is?to be the future of the' metai pit in Barthoiomew Road after it has been worked out? I'nis quesdon was- touched on at iast night's meeting of the Levin Boroqgh Counci:, it being stated that the pit would probably be used as a rubbish disposal area. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, • said that those who were au Athletic Park on Saturday would be interested to kiiow that that iand was once the rubbish dump of Wellington. Now it was 'a valuable asset. The question oi! oeginning the filiing in of the Kent Street pit was also mencioned. * Sr * An application ror the use of Levin Park Domain and occasionaliy the Weraroa Reserve on Sunday morning from 10 a.in. unril 12 noon was made by the Horowhenua Highland Pipe Band. Io was stated that it was necessary for practices" for the forthcomine: nipe band champianships.
Objecting to the times, Cr. J. Miner said that they would clash With church services" and he bhought that if the bandsmen were keen enough they wouid be widing to start earlier. The Mayor said he did not think the oand would wish to clash with the church services either. It was decided to grant the request providing the ground was vacated before 11 a.m; It was also decided to convey to the band the councii's best wishes and the hope for its success at the championships. * * >i« Seeking a grant for its funds, the Levin School Diamond Jubilee Committee wrote to the councii. A grant of £1 ls-was decided upon. - * * $ The Levin Business Protection Association brought to the counciil's nodce the protection against fire and burglary made possib..e oy the employment of its night w(atchman and asked the council to become a member at a weekly fee of 5s. The council agreed to join the scheme. * 1 * * An application by the Levin Junior Chamber of Commerce for che remission of the £12 reno for the hire of the Regent Hall for a two-day mannequin parade in aid 'of the'mhildren's play centre was received. The council declined the appilication. * * * Applications for permission to erect additional kerbside pelrol pumps wer made by Mfcssrs J. C. Milnes anr McMinn Motors. Both application were approved. A plan 0. a proposed subdivision in Weraroa Road ori behalf of Mr. H. G. T. Taylor was submitted by a firm of solicitors. The plan was approved subject to eertain condi'tions. # ^ A nuisance being created by the keeping of horses in the former council pound site in Devon Street was brought'to the councii's notice by Mr. W. J. Guinan, health inspector. He asked that the council take steps to abate the nuisance as soon as possible. The council decided to write to the lessee poiriting out that the nulisance must cease. i'fi ^
A recent improvement to the Regent Hall supper room has been the installation of a tea boiler supplying three-quarters of a gallon of boiling water per minute, stated the gas committee in its report. The cost had been £35. It also recommended that two gas flres be instalied in the supper room for the use o"f persons using the room for meetings. This was agreed to by the council. The council decided to prepare a case for an increase in the prices for gas and coke for submission to the price tribunal. * * $ ~ Following upon the allowan'ce made for 'borough street improvements at the annual meeting of the council, the works committee last night submitte'd the fol owing programme of priorities: Liverpoo. Street footpath format'ion, Beach Road footpath formation, repairs aird heavy top dressing of McKenzie Street, the reformation and sealing of George Street, Bath Street extension and Queenwood I Road.
