Skiing Championships
NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 4. The snow was soft and crystaline ana weather eonditions were perfect for "tne flrst day of the North Island ski championships at East Mt. Egmont on Saturday. The standard of skiing was a definite improvement on last year's and according to ofificials, the selection of a team to compete against the Aiustralians, will be difficult because of the number with claims to ittclusion. The 1946 and 1947 New Zealand down hill and slalom champion, Miss Helen Alanson (Ruapehu Ski Club), Owhango, who resumed skiing only a few weeks ago after recovering 'from a broken leg suffered at the conclusion of a skiiing holiday in Switzerland last year, was unfortuante. Onb of her skis came olf in her hrst run but in the second she put up tlie f astest time in lm. 3 3-5s. Eesults, with total time for the two runs, were: — Men's Slalom: R.
