AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. * For being in possession of uncustom ed goods — 64 ball-pointed pens and 66 refiils: — John Patrick Newman, a Queen Street retailer, was fined £25 in the Auckland Police Court today. The pens and refills, for which he had paid £97 10s, were said to have been confiscated. The Cuctoms Department prosecutor said t.hese pefts of United "States "and Canadian origin were not yet on the New Zealand market because if unport lieensing. The principal of the master agents said if avaiiable here they could be retailed for 17s 6d each. Defendant said he had paid 27s 6d for the pens and 2s 6d for the refills to an unknown man who said he had a licenee to import. Defendant surmised that the duty had been paid. The Magistrate (Mr J. Morling) imposing the minimum fine said that to accept the word of a casual man'coming to a sliop was not a sufiicient discharge o-f liability.
