Man Who Wrote Offensive Letters Fined
DANNEVIRKE, Sept. 2. An unusual case was heard before Justices of the Peace when Robert Lionel Boyd was charged with oTensive behaviour at Napier last May. Accused had written offensive letters suggesting indecent acts and ieft them on Brewster Steps, near the Napier Girl's High School. The Ytters were written as if corre*nond:nce was being carried on b-fwren high school girls, and sugges ed that they meet accused at a "iven place. Police Sergeant Rippi% of Napier, said accused was a married man, and 34. He had left the letters lying on the steps in the hone that girls might pick them up and meet him. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was fiiied £5, the maximum penalty under the Act, the Bench remarking that in its opinion the penalty ailewed by the Act was wholly inadequate. An application for the suppression of accused's name was refused. Accused was also convicted and admitted to nrobation for 12 months on a charge of false pretences involving a small sum.
