Dangerous Man Escapes From Asylum

AUCKLAND, August oi. Oue of two men who staged a . dramatie eseape from tfye Auckland prison on September 30,- 1948, wlien tliey drove out of tlie gaol quarry in a prison truek and were arrested in a store at Pirongia on the night of Octobei' G at the point of a shotgun, is agaili at large. He is James Daniel Pease, aged 29, a Canadian sliip's steward, vvith a record as a burglar, car converter, and ineorrigible rogue. Last Thursday he escaped from tlie Auckland mental hospital wliere ne was transferred from prison in February. When Pease was before tne Supreme Court he claiined he was suffering from mental depression. His parther in the daring escape from the Auckland prison was Peter Seaton Young, aged 23. They were at large for a week, breaking through a strong police cordon in a converted motorcar. The man who reeaptured them, Mr. Clarence Edward Schwartfeger, a grocer's assistant, kept both at bay in the Pirongia store for 40 minutes untii the police from Te Awamutu arrested the escapees. The police descnbe Pease as of fresh complexion, brown hair, green eyes, a cyst above tlie right eye, a scar on ihe cliin, and a tattoo mark on the right upper arm. His height is 5 feet 84 inches. He is a native of England.
