Labour M.P. Fined For Negligent Driving
NAPIER, August 29. A chaTge of negligent driving on the Napier-Hastings highway was brought against Arthur Ernest Armstrong, Member of Parliament for Napier, in the Magistrate's Court this morning. He pleaded guilty and was fined £7 10s with 10s costs by Mr. L. H. Sinclair, S.M. Senior-Sergeant W. R. Miller said Armstrong was driving towards Napier on Saturday, August 13, when his car swerved to tlie right four feet across the centre line of the road and struek a car driven by Stanley Frederick Addis, of Waipawa. No one was hurt, and the damage was confined to the mudguards of both vehicles. Mr. H. W. Dowling, for Armstrong, said the defendant was in a hurry to get back to Napier to take a Ministerial eall, and he thouglit he may have been late. He reached across to save a fragile parcel which was in danger of falling out when the door of the dashboard compartment opened and monientarily took his attenlion from driving. Mr. Dowling said the statements by traffie officials and others rebutted the rumours, which had spread since the accident, and that there was no evidenee of the defendant having taken liquor before the accident.
