New Tb. Vaccine In Use In Dominion
WELLINGTON, August 30. Supplies of the tuberculosis vaccine BCG were arriving regularly in New Zealand and the vaccine had already been used by pathologists at the Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Wellington and Christchurch Hospitals, said the Minister of Health (Miss Howard) today. . • "All the results so far have proved satisfactory, and the approved vaccinators are now training medical officers from all over New Zealand in the technique of using BCG,(' the Ministpr added. The use of the vaccine had to ' be strictly eontrolled and ofiicers of the Department of Health had worked out a speeial programme for its application. The vaccine must be used within a week or 10 days after its manufacture, and it ' was essential that the medicai oliicers using the vaccine were thoroughly conversant with the exaet procedure, eontinued the Minister. "Supplies are prepared at the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in Australia each Wednesday and flown to Auckland on the Friday. It is held there in cool store until , the Mondajr. In the meantime tests are eonducted in Australia and a cablegram sent to the department notifying it whether tne par'ticular batch is safe for use.
