250-MiIe Bullock Trek. A mob of 250 bullocks from Mangamuka is being driven south to Huntly, a distance of over 250 miles. In recent years cattle have been trucked by rail and this is the first mob that has been driven overland for some time. Infectious DiseaseS. Seven cases of infectious diseases were notifled in the Manawatu-Kawke?s ' Bay-We'lling-ton health district during the past week. They were: Streptococcal sore throat including scarlet fever, 3, tuberculosis 3, dysentery 1. Competition Successes. Further awards were won yesterday by Levin enfrants in the, Manawatu Competitions Society's' annual festival. Dale Williams gained first place in the classical ballet (under six - years) , while John Elliott was placed second in the sword tlance class (under eight years). Comedy Presentation. The festival winning comedy, "Mrs. Methuselah," is to be presented hy the Levin Women's Institute in the coilege hall tonight. With it will be a good supporting variety programme. Booking has been heavy but good seats will still be obtainable tonight. The institute is donating half the proceeds to the Levin Red Cross Society to assist it in providing parcels for the people of Britain. Doctor's Quest. Believed to be the first attempt to chronicle events in ancient Maori history, research into the genealogies of the' race has been undertaken by Dr. J. B. W. Roberton, of Kawhia. It may have farreaching results and will probably provide a basis for writing the complete chronological history of the Maori people. By placing ancient events in their proper sequence the stirring chapters of the first permanent native settlement in these islands will appear in better perspective. Outstanding Film. Acclaimed. by critics as one of the most outstanding documentary post war films, "The Search," is to be shown in the Regent Theatre, Levin, during United Nations Week, which commences on October 24. It is a picture which every person should see. In a letter to the Mayor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, the president of the Levin branch of the United Nations Association, Mr. E. R. Winkler, requested that approaches be made to the theatre company for its screening. The reply received. hy the Mayor from the company stated that it had been intended to show the film .in December, but in view of the association's request it had now been booked to coineide, with the celebration- of United Nations Week. Theft Of Pearls. When a man and his -wife, guests at an ho'tel in Palmerston North, returned to their room.' on July 2 last they found. that the. door would not readily opeii as it was being held from the iiisMe. They managed to force their way in and found a man who made some excuse about • waiting for a friend. A search of the room later revealed that a string of pearls, valued at about £2, was missing. .
