Preparing For Summer Sport

Although indications are present in the garden and the fields that summer is on the way, today's strong easterly wind does not suggest the playing of cricket .is tennis. Nevertheless, there is movement among the local summer sports clubs in preparation Eor the coming season. The bowling club has been active Eor some weeks in preparing the green and generally cleaning up the surroundings ofsthe property. The annual meeting has been held and, with indications of a larger membership, the committee is eagerly awaiting the opening day and the commencement of ' another successful season— the excellent condition of the green indicates that the season will be successful. The local cricketers, too, have one eye on the calendar now that the football season is drawing to a close. They must await the departure of the footballers before work can commence on the laying down of the pitch and the general work of preparing the outfleld. The club will be holding its annual meeting on Wednesday, September 7, in the meeting room of the fire station and the committee extends an invitation to 'all* followers of the sport to attend. After winning the senior competition last year, the club again has hopes of fielding a strong te^m this season.

The athletic and cyclmg ciub isalso anxious to get started with field preparation. Unfortunately weather conditions over the last few weeks have prevented any extensive work being done on the grounds or the , cycle track. This club is another of the summer sports bodies which made a good impression on the public last season and it is to be hoped that it will receive the same enthusiastic following this season. There is little activity among tennis players at present, but once the winter sports are completed this live club will swing into action. The skies may still be overcast, but it will not be long before the white uniforms jof_ the ^summer sports men and" women, make tlieir appearance on the streets on their way to the greens, the courts and the cricket field.
