Draw Seems Likely In Game With Middlesex

Cowrignt)

ReeeiVed Tuesday, 9.30 a.m. LONDON, August 29. .Ne\v Zealaiid scored at the useful avefage rate of 69 runs hou'rly against Middlesex today and with a total of 328 took a first innings' lead of 13. They batted for 4^- hours and reached the Middlesex total in 80 minutes under the time takeli by 'the county. Middlesex are one for 42 in their second innings and are thus 29 in front With nine wickets to fall. Stitcliffe, Wallace, Donnelly and Hadlee ail made 50 or more and Donhelly, who reached *70, also had the satlsfaction of takiiig his total for the toiir past 2000 runs— thereby following Sutcliffe's example. They all batted attractively and at times the rate of scoring reached 73 hourly. This was appreciated by the crowd, which was bigger than on Saturday, totalling hearly 20,000 of which 16,765 paid £2095. A drawn- game appears likely. Though New Zealand made -a poor start with Scott being caught behind.. the wickgt when only 13 runs were on the board, Sutcliffe lost'no opportunity of hitting. He played both Edrich and Warr, the medium pace seamers, with ease and his off driving was particularly attractive. Reid looked like getting mahy runs, but when he was 18 he was clean bowled by Sims. Sutcliffe reached 50 in 75 minutes and he and Wallace brought up 100 in 80 minutes. Soon afterwards Sutcliffe was out leg before. Donnelly and Wallace pushed the score a'ong, the latter reaching his 50 in 70 minutes before going to a brilliant catch . by Brown at midwicket. Rabone was ishort lived and then Donnelly and Hadlee partnered for 71 before Donnelly was ^eg before to Edrich. The remainder of the New Zealand innings was interesting, chiefly for Hadlee reaching 50 and for the steady partnership of 32 by Burtt and Burke. Details: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings. - Scott, c L.
