CABINET APPROVES BRIEF OF CRIPPS FOR TALKS

Received Tuesday, 10.45 a.m. LONDON, August 29. The British Cabinet, after sitting for 4 hours, approved of Sir Stafford Cripps's brief for the Washington dollar crisis talks. The Minister of Food, Mr. Strachey, and the Minister of Fuel and Power, Mr. Gaitskell, -who are not members of the Cabinet, were asked to attend the meeting. Mr. "Gaitskell is believed to have been called in to discuss dollar purchases of petrol. Mr. Strachey's presence suegests that Cabinet discussed possifre cuts in dollar purch«ses of food. The War Secretary, Mr. Sliinwell, the Air Secretary, Mr. Arthur Henderson, and the service chiefs, Field Marshal Sir William Slim," Marshal of the R.A.F. Lord Tedder and Vice-Admiral Sir John Edelsten attended this afternoon. The Evening Standard says that one reason for Britain's difficulties is her widespread defence commitments, particularly in the Middle East and Far East. It is possible that Mr. Bevin and Sir Stafford Cripps will urge that America should ease Britain's financial burden in this respect.
