PersonaL Mr. J. Hateley, of Otorohanga, was a recent visitor to his parents, Mr. and Mrs.' B. Hateley, Mangaore. Miss H. Cronquest, of Wellington, spent the weekend as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. .CronquesL Stout " Street. Mr. and Mrs. G. Fitzgerald, of Wellington, and Mr. T. S. Downes returned ' oyer the weekend after spending a three weeks' motor -tour of the northern districts. Church And Hall Improvements. Improvements are heing carried out to the Ven Bede's Anglican Church and the Parish Hall in Stout Street. The new fence in front of the church is nearing completion and the grounds are being put in order. The Parish Hall, which will shortly become the major hall of the town, is alsp receiving attention, the first coat of paint having already been applied. Foxton Races Popular. Considered -to be one of the district's most popular sports functions, the Foxton Racing, Club's meeting on Saturday was" again the attraction for many of Shannon's citizens." The meeting. is looked upon locally as a day out and many who do not normally follow the sport of kings spent the day on the course. Two buses were needed to transport the large crowd eager to attend, and a number of private cars also made the trip. Fortunately the weather conditions were good and a day of enjoyable entertainment resulted. R.S.A. Carnival. The seven-day carnival recently conducted by the Shannon branch of the Returned Services' Association proved to be an outstanding sulccess. The treasiurer reports that it is expected that the carnival will contribute over £380 to the War Memorial Hall fund. There are still one or two accounts yet to be paid, but this should not alter the above figure. At a recent meeting of the entertainment committee of the R.S.A. members expressed satisfaction at the result and a motion of thanks to the citizens of Shannon and district for their excellent support was carried.
