Keen Demand For Flowers And Vegetables

Messrs Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that during the last week there has .been a particularly keen demand for all choice lines of green vegetables. Cauliflowers, spring cabbage and choice lettuces are, being keenly sought and values in most cases have proved very satisfactory. ' An early consignment of peas from Hawke's Bay realised up to ls 7d per lb. Choice hothouse tomatoes are wanted. N.Z. grapefruit are slow to quit, •but there is a marked, increase inthe values of meyer lemons. DafEodil's, freezias and violets have all realised attractive values. Light yardings of poultry have resulted in a very keen demand for all prime birds. Quotations are as follows: — Fruit: N.Z. grapefruit, 8s to 12s bushel; meyer lemons, 7s 6d to 9s; tree tomatoes, 7s to 13s; Chinese gooseberries, choice, 25s to 33s all half cases; passion fruit, 4s- to 5s per dozen. Vegetables: Kumeras, 40s cwt.; hothouse tomatoes, choice, 2s 9d to 4s 3d per lb; artichokes, 6s to 8s; beetroot 6s to. 10s; cabbage 8s to 18s; choice lettuce 25s to 35s; others, 15s to 20s; leeks, 3s to 8s; parsnips, 8s to 10s; rhubarb, 20s to 30s; silverbeet; ls to 5s; spinach, 27s to 32s; sprouts, 48s all cases; cauliflowers, 25s to 35s; marrows, 10s to 15s; triumble pumpkins, 18s to 25s all sacks; carrots, 4s to 6s; swedes, 2s to 4s all bags; peas, ls 6d to ls 7d per lb.; onions, 15s to 20s; mint, 6d to ls; parsley ls to 2s; radish, 6d to 9d; Chinese cabbage, 6d to ls 3d; celery, 5s to 9s, all bunches; potatoes, new, ceiling price. Poultry: White Leghorn hens, 5s 6d to 8s; Black Orpington hens, 12s 6d to 14s; turkeys, 2s 3d to 2s 5d per lb. live weight; White Leghorn roosters, 6s 6d to 8s; . Black Orpington roosters, 7s 6d to 9s; white ducks, 12s to 14s; co'oured, 6s 6d to 10s; bantams, 2s 3d to 3s.
