Anxiety For Man Missing In Bush

BOTOEUA, August 27. Police and civilians are searehing rugged country in the Kaharoa district ■ fOr a man who entered the bush to split posts" on Thursday morning and has not been seen since. The missing man is William Crawford, aged 40, bushman. With William Smith, eontraetor, oi Ngongotaha, Crawford was eamped with other timber workers near the old j Tauranga road, about 18 miles from Botorua. The location is known as the Lagoon Soad in the Te Pn bush. At about 8.30 a.m. Thursday, Crawford said he was going into ' the bush to begin work. When he had not returned af 5.30 p.m., Smith searched for him but fouhd no trace. There was heavy rain and mist early in the day. Smith searched again yesterday and about 5.30 p.m. he notified the police of Crawford 's disappearance. A search party consisting of Sergeant J." H. Quartlejq of Botorua, and Constable W. H. Biddle, of Ngongotaha, and eight - experienced 1 bushmen, set out at 8.15 o'clock today. The party split up to search from the Mamaku and Ngongotaha sides of the area but up to noon today nothing has been reported. The weather was perfect. Little is known about the missing man. He joined the team of postsplitters about seven months ago. If today 's search is unsuccessful it will be continued tomorrow.
