N.Z. May Be Asked To Help Defend Hong Kong
SYDNEY, AugUSt 28. The Sydney Heraid's Canberra correspondent says last week's secret military talks in Melbourne were far more important that the cautious offieial statements revealed. The fact that British defence experts flew out from London suggested that the talks were about inore than local security measmes. The two main points discussed at tTie talks were, firstly, what aid Australia and - New Zealand could give Hong Kong in an emergency and, secondly, what contribution Australia and New Zealand could make to a Pacific Pact. It is understood that Australia agreed to send the aircraft carrier Sydney with a destroyer escort to Hong Kong if called upon and possibly an air trans port sq.uadron as well. The practicabil ity of reinforcing Hong Kong from Australian troops now in Japan, was also discussed. In furtherance ' of her role as the main support area, it is understood -Aus tralia gave assurances that work on ManUs Island would be speeded up and the munition output increased.
