Cyclists' Training Ride
— ^ Sponsored by the Otaki Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, a train- . ing ride to Waikanae at the week- . end saw eight riders compete. A stiff northerly wind saw the competitors reach Waikanae in record time, but conditions were the reverse on the return journey and competitors ha'd a hard ride. Some idea of the conditions can be guaged from the times returned. The trin formerly has taken 40 to
45 minutes and • on this occasion the fastest time returned was 1 hour 1 min. 40 secs. Starters were D. Smith and C. Wilton, scratch; E. Walsh, R. Hornig and F. Dakin, 4 mins.; and L. Wilton, S. Snowdon and W. Walsh, 7 mins. In a great finish Snowdon won by the barest possible margin from E. Walsh, with D. Smith in third place, with a bunch arriving two minutes later. Walsh and Smith both met with mixed fortune during the trip, the former falling at Waikanae, but • remounte'd and continued on, while the latter had a nasty fall. halfway home, losing a good deal of time. Fastest time was secured by E. Walsh, who took 1 hr., 1 min., 40 secs. Second fastest time went to D. Smith, in 1 hr., 2 mins., 9 secs. The winner's time was 1 hr., 4 mins., 40 secs.
