Received Tuesday, 7 p.m. •! MELBOURNE, August 23. The Australian freighter Time, of 3322 tons, ran aground on a reef inside Port Phillip Heads today and is regarded as a total loss. Tlre vessel was bound from Sydney to Melbourne with a full cargo of sugar and a erew of 44. As she passed tlirough the Heads against a strong ebb tide, her steering gear wafs carried awajr. She lcept on and cleared the rough water of "the rip" but r&n full upon Corsan reef. The Qireen's Gliff lifeboat was quiekly alongside and began to take off the personal belongings of the. crew. For thc first time in Victorian eoastal rescue work, two- way radio operated between the lifeboa't, Port Lonsdale liglithouse and Williamstown and a continuous commentary on the situation was reported. The vessel is balaneing on the edge of the reef with defep water astern and a large hole in No. 2 hold. Her engines were reported this afternoon to be still pumping but the bilge eontains sand indicating that as she settles her position is beeoming more preearious. The Queen's Cliff police say there is no ehttnce of saving her as she began to break up before noon. Tlie crew ra in no danger and will be taken off if the situation. deteriorates.
