Drug Smuggling Ring Smashed
Received Sundav, 7.30 p.m. NEW YORK, August 20. The Federal Narcotics Bureau announced that it had smashed the largest drug smuggling ring in the bureau rs history. The ring, in the last year, had smuggled cocaine worth 5,000,000 dollars on the illicit market into the United States from Peru. The announcement followed the arrest Of a wealthy Peruvian, Eduardo Balarezo, who signed on as a ship 's steward fo ra voyage to Italv allegedly in an attempt to revive his fading drug trade, The assistant United States Attornev, Mr. .Toseph Martin, said Balarezo had operated his alleged smuggling ring by establisliing faith with a seaman who would be given a note to Balarezo 's wife in Peru. She in turn would arrange to have cocaine given to the seaman and when he delivered tlie shipment in New York he would be given 1000 dollars for his services. M^. Martin said Balarezo 's wife had been arrested in Peru and also 60 others suspected of being implicated'in the alleged ring.
