Women's Division Holds Surprise Party

: The August meeting of the Otaki-Te Horo branch of the Women's Division of Federated Farmers was held in the Druids' Hal'l, Otaki, on Tuesday last. Al"though the day was one of the coldest experienced for some time, there was a full attendance of ■over 60 members and also several visitors. The meeting was actually a surprise party tendered to Miss Dorothy Avery, who has been honorary secretary and treasurer of the branch for some 11 years, 'during which time all her efforts have been devoted to furthering the work of the division in this dis- . triet. After the necessary business of the afternoon had been dealt with, the president, Mrs. S. Blackburn, presented the guest of honour with a silver teapot. In doing so, Mrs. Blackburn stressed how much she and others who had held office as president owed to the co-operation of Miss Avery. Mrs. Blackburn said members would agree that such unselfish service for others had earned for Miss Avery the respect, love and admiration of all her fellow members. Miss Avery responded and thanked members most sincerely for their gift, which she said was such a surprise she felt overwhelmed. She was most grateful and assured all that her work had always been a source of satisfaction and happiness to her. After the buffet tea served by the hostesses, Mesdames L. Smith and V. Cottle, Mrs. R. W. Jenkins gave a very interesting talk on her recent tour of Australia, describing very fully her impressions of every aspect of Australian life with which she had come in contact. Mrs. C. Moore reported on the recent outing given to Otaki Sanatorium patients, when they were driven to Foxton Beach and entertained to tea there. During the month parcels for Portchester had been packed and despatched as follows: — Sixty parcbls each containing two tins of fat, two of tongues, two of meats and two of milk. There was a most generous response to the monthly appeal for Corso.
