MAORI FOOTBALLER WITHOUT HANDS
AUCKLAND, August 17. For probably the first time in 20 years, -a Rugby football /team composed of residents of the Great Barrier Isl'and has competed against an outside 15. Their opponents were a side from the cruiser Bellona and the game was played when the ship called at Port Fitzroy in the course of exercises in the Hauraki Gulf. Eugby has recently been revived on the island. However, with the small population of young men, most matches have to be plaj^ed with less than full teams and the Ilellona's visit provided one of the first few op portunities for a full fifteen to be fielded. It included farmers and bush workers and oue of the forwards was a Maori who had lost both hands in a bush felliug accident some years ago. His skill in handling the ball with his arms amazed the Navy players. The Bellona team won the match by 23 poijits to nii. A return game is to be played when the Bellona revisits Port Fitzroy later.
