HOROWHENUA RUGBY
Championships Now Nearing Completion The Horowhenua Rugby Union's 1949 championships are now nearing completion. The senior honours will be decided next Saturday * at Shannon, where Athletic and Shannon meet. If Athletic 'can win the day each club will have 22 points and there will be a play- > off. If they lose the game or it V is drawn Shannon will' take the ' > premiership. The knock-out competition for the Nash Cup will commence on Saturday in conjunction with the final series of games in the championship. Three series of games remain to be played tp complete the junior championship, where Athletic are ieading by three points from Punahau. However, Athletic have yet to take thelr bye, so that either of these teams might be the ul'timate victors. Though the third grade competition does not conclude until Saturday, Old Boys have won the honours and at present have the impressive lead of nine points over the next team, Shannon. They have an unbeaten record, although Foxton held them to a. six-all draw in the first game of the season. The fourth grade competition has one series of eames to complete it and this will be played on August 27. College A hold an unassailahe lead of six points over Rahui. They have - won 11 of the 12 games played, one being drawn, and have notched 274 points to only 27 against. The table below shows the position of teams in the various grades: —
