Marching Association Elects New Officers
The season had commenced with three senior and three junior teams, beat one senior and one junior team had withdrawn in the latter part, said (the president, Mr. W. R. Jack, in his report to the well-attended annual meeting gf the - Horowhenua Marching "Association this week. A very successful meeting had been held in Foxton and the sport revived tthere, with the result that two senior teams from that town would be making their appearance in the new season. The season had opened on October 25 with a gala day, when the star attraction was a Popular Girl contest, continued Mr. Jack. The award had gone to Miss. S. Learmont, ' Shamrocks. One team, Caledonian, had estdblished a wonderful record for the season. Its successes were: — Levin: First in open' championship, first in local championship, winning the Watts Shield, an'd leader first. Marton: First in open championship and leader first. Manawata Centre championship: First in open and leader first. Wanganui: Team third and leader third. Palmerston North: First in open championship and leader first. Hutt Valiey: First in open championship and leader first. Feilding: First in open championship and leader first. North Islan'd championships: Leader first. Wellington: First in open championship and leader first. In all 16 cups and three shields had been won by the team, a record unequalled for one season by- any other team in the Dominioii. Mr. Jack thanked the instructors and teams for the' .time they had given to the sport, specially mentioning Mr. J. R. Macfarlane, the senior instruetor, for his untiring efforts; the judges and particularly Mr. F. G. Carrington, who had since been appointed chief ju'dge for the Manawatu Centre; members of the parents' committee, whose work during the season had been greatly appreciated by local and visiting teams alike; the Foxton, Otaki and Levin Municipal Bands and the Horowhenua Pipe Band for ready co-operation at all times; the auditor, Mr. J. A. Goodwin, for continued interest and help; the St. -John Ambulance Brigade. for valuable assistance; tthe Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Burdekin, for kind assistance; Mr. W. Shilton for acting as secretary; Mr. W. H. Fraser for surveying the grounds prior to a contest; the Press for publicity; the committee, gate-keepers and ground stewards. Reference was also made by Mr. Jack to the association's loss in the departure for Australia of Mr. A. L. Dobson, who had been secretary since, ,-the, association's inception. Miss Smith and Mr. Young were appointed delegates to the Manawatu Centre.
