Serious Petrol Position in Australia

Received Tuesday, 11 p.m. CANBERRA, August 6. A grave petrol shortage in Australia in the coming summer montlis was forecast by the Director of Rationiug, IMr. J. B. Fumming. He told .ihe Premier's conferenee the position was going to be serious, particuiarly for harvesting. Petrol saies in June and July were 21,680,000 gallons in excess . of quotas fixed under rationiug. Against that a supplementary quota of 3,000,000 gallons. was fixed because of strike conditions. That left 18,680,000 gallons to be made good by restricted saies in the succeeding ten months. The Prime Minister, klr. Ghifley, said Australia might ha\'e to reduce petrol imports. Petrol was the lieaviest drain on the British Treasury dollar pool. Briefly, the position was that there- were no more doliars for petrol.
