Scouts And Cubs Celebrate Birthday
The Poroutawhao scout and cub group celebrated its second birthday with a social evening. The flrst portion of the programme was occupied with a lantern sude lecture on New • Zealand's scenic beauties by Rev, A. Salmohd and it was followed by a highly successf ul concert by the scouts and cubs of the group, Individual items were as follows:— Song in character, J. Tait and J. Jamieson; recitation, W. Vickers; song with guitar accompaniment, D. Hapeta ; recitation, E. 1 Green; song in character, "Waltzing Matilda," J. Davison (swagman), Guy Jansen (squatter) and B, Suteliffe, I. Moore and W. "Vickers (troopers) ; song, E. Green; recitation, J. Tait; song, J, Jamieson; pianoforte duet, G. Jansen and J. Jamieson; chorus, E. Green, W. Vickers, I. Moore, H. Tihema and S. Cameron; song, Ida" Jamieson; xecitations, B, Suteliffe; accordeon solo, J. Tait; recitation, J. Jamieson; song, R. W, Green; dahbe, cubs, Interspersed with the items were popular song llitS. Distinguished Visitors. Brief talks were g'iven by the county commissioner, Mr. J. Horriblow, ' the assistant county commissioner, Mr. J, Martin, and the district commissioner, Mr. -V. E. Hudson. Mr. . Hornblow introduced the Domihion chief commissioner, Mr. T. Seddon, and his party, who were spending the weekend at Tatum Park; Manakau, It included Mr. . H. Seddon Hills (head.quarters commissioner), . Mr. A. Dale (Dominion secretary), Mr. J. R. CQoksey (Dominion commissioner for training), Mr. A. Absolam (county * commissioner, Hawke's Bay), Sir Joseph Ward (county commissioner, Canterbury) an.d Mr. W. Birchall (county commissioner, Otago) . A short ad'dress was given by°Mr. Seddon, who commented that he doubted whether so large a num.ber of county commissioners had ever :been. together ' at such' a function previously. Scouter Green thanked the. commissioners for attending and for their helpful advice. He made reference to the fine service, which had been rendered to the group by Mrs, W. Tait. Cubmaster Green presented Mrs. Tait with a shoul'der spray as a token of ap1 preciation from the' scouters' troop and pack. ' The dispensing. of supper followed. The candles on the birthday cake were lit by Mr. Hudson and extinguished by Sixer J. Jamieson, whose birthday was on ; the! same day. Troop Leader E. Green cut the cake, which was decorated with the scout arrowhead and the group's colours. Visiting troops included Cubmaster Dean and the Te Awahou Pack, Scoutmasler Rippin and Assistant Scoutmaster ,, McAllister with the Te Awahou Scout Troop, Mr. W. Hale of the Te Awahou Scout Committee, Cubmaster Blenkhorn and assistants with sixers and seconds of the Kia Maia Pack, Assistant Scouter Hiidson (Levin) and rover and cubmasters from Palmerston North. . A "dance after supper was enjoyed by the adults and brought a pleasant evening to a close. Music was supplied by Mrs. Tait, Misses L. Jamieson and L. Shortt and Mr. A. Anderson. Mr. J. Jamieson, who welcomed the guests*as chairman of the committee, was master of ceremonies for the dancing.
