Fines And Penalties In Otaki Court
Several offenders appeared before Mr. A. A. McLachlan,' S.M., in ihe Magistrate's Court, Otaki, yesterday charged with trafftc breaches. There were also numerous cases oi' olfenders under the licensing laws. H. Benbow, C. D. Rogers and T. G. Fox were each charged with being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall at Te Horo on July 9. Each defendant was eonvicted and fined £3, pleas of guiity being entered. L. Rudman and Reg. Feilding were charged with being cn licensed premises after hours. The former stated that he lived eight miies out and came to town but one a fortnight, and was endeavouring to obtain some beer to take home. Fielding did not appear. A fine of £1, with costs 12s, was entered in each case. Rangi Rikihana, Walter Pohio and Clifton Nash were each charged with being on licensed premises after hours. Constable A. C. Hobbs, prosecuting, said he saw defendants enter a hotel yard and on seeing him they climbed a fire escape. When questioned they said they wanted to use the telephone. Each was fined 20s, with 10s costs. The Transport Department (Inspector Mason) charged M. J. McLeavey and S. J. W. Robinson, of Palmerston North, with (1) driving an excesdvely weighted vehicle over the Otaki Bridge and (2) with ;arrying' an excessive ax e load. Defend&nts pleaded guiity by le.ter and fines of £3 on the firsc charge and £2 on the second, with v 10s costs in each case, were inflicted.
