Case applied for a lease | of the council reserve adjoining his property, advising of his infcention to clear the property of all scrub. It was decided to advise the appiicant that the council had no power to lease reserves un:ess first advertising. A draft copy of the terms of lease is to be obtained from the Commissioner of Crown Lands. Messrs. Applications Approved. A spercentage-of the gate takings at a recent hockey match was offered to the council by the Horowhenua Hockey Association. It was agreed that as the amount was small and that the association seldom had a "gate" at the domain, the amount in question be thank-, fully declined. The management of. Otaki Theatres, Ltd., submitted a suggestion thac a benefit screening take place 011 August 31, when a comedy production would be made available. The Otaki Presbyterian Church Ladies' Association was given permission to hold a shop day at Otaki Railway on August 12. As the condition in the lease makes it necessary for the occupier to leave the area to be used as a Centennial Park at Otaki Railway ready for planting and sowing down, and as councillors agreed , that the best time to commence work is in February 01- March, the occupier is to be allowed to re'main in possession un-til the end of February. The secretary of the Ixion Motor Cycle Club wrote seeking permission to hold a motor-cycle beach race meeting north of the Waitohu Stream on December 3. The application stated that 'the club had been in existence 21 years. It *outlined steps taken for the public safety and stressed that a speed limit of 20 m.p.h was enforced on all mo.or-cycles from the Main North Road to the beach. As the beach north of the Waitohu is under the control of the Horowhenua County Council, the applkants are
"0 be advised-tfp seek permission from that quafter. The Dominion Federation of Milk Vendors, Wellington, wrote asking if, in the event of a local milk authority being- set up in the area from Johnsonville to Foxton, the council would appoint a member to -ontro' he milk supply and represent consumer interests in the borough. Opiniops expressed were that thb. ekistifit^kppply . was probably " the * besF '"'that cqnsumefs qould wish for, and that. the council was not well enough informed of the functions of a local milk authority to come" to a decision. The letter was held over. Workshop Objected To. Mr. J. C. Meyer, on behalf of householders, forwarded an objecr tion to the granting of a permit to build a workshop at the junetion of Arthur and Dunstan Streets, which it was considered would be an eyesore and a danger to traffic. The complainant asked that the matter be referred to the town planner as residents in the vicinity were striving to make the locality attraclive. Councillois were of the" opinion that although the work to be done was clean and that little noise.would resul^, as the are'a was a residential one, the request made by the compainant 1 should be agreed to, and the ad'vice of the town planner is to be sought. | A complaint that, after clearing" the roadway and burying rubbish joutside a home at Tasman Beach and planting grass seed, the council's grader had thrown rubble on to the cleared .ground, as well as going over the plot, was forwarded •by Mrs. M. M. McConville. The merk advised that the foreman had lattended to this matter and any damage done had been rectified. j Qwing to the increasing demand for the use of a public telephone booth and postal box in the vicinity of the proposed Tasman -Beach 'motor eamp, an application has been forwarded by Mr. R. C. Anketell to the postmaster, Otaki, in which he offers to oversee the telephone booth, if erected adjacent to his store, thus avoiding any possibility of abuse. A copy of the application was forwarded to the councils' meeting on Wednesday night. .■
