Received Thursday, 7 p.m. LOXDON, August 11. 1 What is described by Scotland Yard officers as the largest atteinpted confidence trick in British history, was uipped in the bud when the police discovered that a band of confidence . men had practically completed arrange-n.-ents to sell a large disused Royal Air Force aerodrome to a South African for a suin in the vicinity of £250,000. The South African, who decided not to prosecute wheii he discovered he was being ewindled, flew from Cape Town to inspect the ground and was shown over it by several men who re- , presented themselves as ollicials , author-ised to dispose of it. The purchase was to include several buildings and a quantity of used equipment. "It was something like trying to sell Brooklyn Bridge, " said one Scotland Yard offieer.
