Championship First Round Played At Levin
Last Saturday saw the Levin Golf Club start its 1949 club championships. Most of the games scheduled for the first round were played, but there are a few games in the junior and intermediate division still to be decided. In the senior division the position is as follows: — W. G. Clark oeat C. Hosie to play A. Saunders, who beat O. C. Lagor; J. Sams beat J. McDonald to play T. J. Coutie, who won by default from E. Clark; B. Eagar beat B. Antcliff to play A. H. Landers, who won by default from S. Atkins; A. Ciarke beat D. E. Clark to play S. Franklin, who beat A. Hasxedt. Atkinson Trophy. The third annual competition for this trophy was held at the weekend and took the form of a mixed foursome. Last year's winners, the club president and Mrs. Frederikson, had no apparent difficulty in returning a ne. 67 to again be victorious. This they did despite the fact that the first lady had a mishap at the third green, where she I failed to negotiate the fence. Close runners-up were Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Richards, who returned a very nice nett 69. The first year's winners, Mr. and Mrs. A. Hastedt returned the best gross score. Top Dogs Competition. Despite a very siern ch'allenge from Corrv and Coutie, the holders, Frank Ve'ysey and Dick Jones, still occupy the seats of the mighty. The chahengers were three up at the turn and it iooked as though they had to fall over \.o lose. They fell and the top dogs won the next five hoies, pufctmg a very different com-P-exion on the game. The next pair to try conclusions will be Stan Atkins and Cullen King, two experienced fourball p ayers who have held the trophies against all comers in the past. Rules Of Golf. It does appear-to be a fact that a big percentage of players, more especiady the long handicap chaps, have only a vague knowledge of th;e rmes governing this game of ours. If there is anv dou-bt about a penaliy, it is better to count it on your ca,rd and discuss it with some member of the committee when you return to the clubhouse. Those who do understand the rules shou d point out every breach that' they see during play, because no golfer, beginner or experienced, wishes to win compe'litions with an incorrect score, whi e you will also be helping the beginner to understand the game and perhaps saving him some future emibarrassrqent when p.aying in strange cornpany. Speaking of rules, the member whG placed his first tee shot behind the clubhouse recently evidentiy did not rea ise that under rule 11 he could have shifted tne clubhouse. Next weekend's fixtures are the third round of the rNicholson Cup and the first visit to 'Foxton to play the return maich. The fohowing Saturday is a free day with no scheduled fixture' on the prograinme. It will be the ideal opportunity to play off any matches that are difflcult to fit in.
