Sutcliffe Hits 243 To Set iew Record

Copyright)

Receivea Tliursday, 9.40 a.m. SOUTHEND, August 10? Yet another record for the New Zealanders in Engiand! Sutelifl'e hit 243 against Essex after being missed four times, the highest score ■ of his career and of any New Zea-: lander in this country. It beat the 225 not out by Roger Blunt in 1931 and Blunt, who was commentating # on the match for the B.B.C., was among the first to congratulate him. New Zealand made 420 on a rather sandy pitch with green patches and a marked tendency to take a spin. Essex is without Bailey, who is resting for the test. Sutcliffe entirely dominated the batting and, with Hadlee, added 97 in one hour for a third-wicket partnership. He was at the crease for 5 hrs. 40 mins. and hit 29 fours. Sutcliffe scored all round the wicket, his favourite shots being off drives and pulls. It was a delightful innings and entirely typical in that Sutcliffe is always prepared to take risks for his runs. He took risks today and was grateful for the chances not accepted; yet they were only slight blemishes from the point of view of strokes, and the arace of his shots and ^xquisite timing charmed the 10,000 people present — 8500 paid £857 for admission. Sutcliffe scored his runs out of a total of 402. Details: — . NEW ZEALAND. First Innings. Sutcliffe, c Pearce^ b Vigar 243 Scott, b P. Smith 29 Reid, b R. Smith 4 Hadlee, b P.
