N.L. Friesian Championship Contests At Levin

The Horowhenua A. and P. Association's 1950 show will be the venue of the New. Zealand Friesian Association's 1949 North Island championship competitions. Advice to this effect was received at the quarterly meeting of the local branch yesterday from the association.

It was stated that this was the first occasion on which the championship had been held here and satisfaction was expressed by members present that the branch's a,pplication had been successful. The chairman, Mr. B. S. Kyle, pointed out the desirability of encouraging large entries and attracting outsi'de- interest, stating that much could be done by the local breeders towards this end. Statas Raised. Advice was also received from the N.Z. association that approval had been granted for the raising of Ihe local organisation from the Horowhenua sub-branch to the full Status of a district branch. This would entail the alteration in name of the Wellington district branch to the Manawata district branch, the letter stated. A further letter from the association announeed approval of the appointment of Messrs. A. R. Horne and F. O. Malcolm as junior judges.

Points Of Friesians. a clearer definiiion of the points of a Friesian show bull seemed to be necessary, said some members during general . discusion. Breeders were somewhat in the dark over the position as there seemed no uniformity in decisions or opinions of judges. The chairman said that there was the association's points chart as a guide, but natarally the personal element always came into it. He agreed, however, that the matter could be looked into by the show judges or a committee set up by them. Mr. F. O. Malcolm said he would like to see refresher courses for judges, at which an animai could be exhibited and the points gone over so that the judges could get uniformity of opinion. It was subsequently decided that more thought be given the matter by members and that perhaps a remit could be framed for the association's annual meeting along the lines that judges hold a field day every year in conjunction with their annual meeting, and that it be open to breeders to attend also. The discussion arose from a letter from the association, which stated that dissatisfaction had been expressed with the way in which the bulls were judged and it was thought necessary by some that a change in the points for type was desired. The association asked for an expression of opinion from the branch, but on this particular point It was decided to. take no action. a second sugge&ion for, fhe association was "that bull classes be omitted from the schedules of shows and that progeny classes be substituted. On this point the meeting decided to recommend that there be no alteration. Registration Of Bulls. a further suggestion submitted by the association for the branch's comment was that only bulls from dams of over 5001b. of butterfat be registered. The meeting decided that it make no recommendation. ' In regard to the forthcoming North Island championships, it was decided to approach Mr. r. h. Dickie, of Mataura, to officiate as judge. Present at the meeting were Messrs. B. S. Kyle (chairman), D. Sorenson (secretary), f. O. Malcolm, P. M. Small, D. Standish, R. w. and a. r. Horne, f. H. Monk, D. w. Boddy and T. r. Lang
