Move To Improve Levin's Water Supply

A recommendation by the works committee authorising the expenditure of up to- £300 in making investigations regai'ding the sinking of a well adjacent to the Olfau River in order to tap the und-erground flow of the stream was adopted by the Levin Borough Council at a speciai meeting on Monday night. This is the result of an earlier discussion •by the council on ways and means of improving the water .supply. It was also decided by the council that before this aetion is taken the engineer shouid investigate the possibility of an artesian supp'y In the vicinity of the Levin Dairy Company's property in Queen Street. Regarding flooding in the King's Drive-Tiro Tiro Road area, reported at .the council's last f ortnightly meeting, it was decided to enlarge the culvert across Tiro Tiro Road, it being considered that this would relieve the trouble. The Mayor, Mr. H. B. Bui'dekin, and Cr. A. W. Parton, were appointed to wait on the Horowhenua County Council's next meeting to t'ake up with it the borough's storm water problem and the question of dispensing with water races. ■ The matter of letting out maintenance work by contract was referred to the works committee for consideration. At a previous meeting concern was expressed by some councillors at the amount .of work being neg'ected or held up due to a shortage of borough staff. A plan of a fresh subdivision of Playford Park and also adjoining private property, to provide for the extension of George Street through to the northern subdivisional street in the park, as suggested earlier by Cr. Parton, had been referred back to the works committee. A plan of subdivision xrn behalf of Mi'. T. G. Cheesman, Bartholomew Road, was approved. Mr. F. S. Allen's plan of subdivision for his property in King's Drive and Princes Street was approved, the owner to be advised that when the block*was further subdivided the council would require ' a road reservation along the southern boundary of the property to provide for drainage and future subdivision.
