Fine And Warning Follows Hotel Brawl
. -v i "It's time you took a pull. You j appear to be looking for or getting j jinto trouble far too often. We are I going to make it plain to you that | if you come before this Court again, : we will take a much more serious ; view." j These comments were addressed , to John Winterburn, when he appeared before Messrs V. J. Cottle I and H. B. Edhouse, J.P.'s, in the j Pouce Court, Otaki, yesterday, charged with being drunk and dis- | orderly. I Sergeant W. S. Hughes said that at 5.40 p.m. on Saturday last he 1 was a'dvised by telephone that a disturbance had taken place at the Central Hotel. When he, entered, accompanied by Constabxe A. C. | Habbs, accused was in a threaten- : ing avtitude and accosting another ! patron. He was arrested. | "There were indications that a , decent sort of a brawl had taken ! piace, and the front door was I smashed," continued Sergeanuj j Hughes. "Some of these people ■ think they can take the law into ! their own hands, but we are going j to see that law an'd order is mainj tained. As you can see, defendant ! certainly looks as if he had been, | in a bit of a brawi." I Evidence was given that defendant was a hard worker, but uhat he I had previous convictions and that | liquor appeared to be his trouble. ; After commenting the Bench I convicted Winterburn and fined j him £5. He was also advised to : seek work out of Otaki, the Bench ! remarking that he seeme'd abie to | keep out of trouble in other places.
