No Reprieve For Acid Bath Murderer
Received Monday, 10.5 p.m. LONDON, August S. The Home Secretary, Mr. Chutcr Ede, has re.fused a reprieve for Jolin George Ilaigh, sentenced to death for the \nu rdcr of Mrs. Olive DurandDencon. The oiticial amiounceinein said: "There are not sutiicient grounds r justify reoommending any interfcrenee with the duo course of the law." The decision was made after an inquiry into Haigh 's niental condition by two doetors. Sueh inquiries are made into the mental condition of all mur derers when there i£ any doubt abo.it sanity. At the trial last nionth Ilaigh 's counsel pleaded that Haigh was insane and not responsible for his aetions. After a two-dav trial at which evidence was heard that Haigh eonfessed to the murder of nine people, the jury rejected the insauitv plea. Ilaigh, who is 40 years of age, did not appeal against the death sentence. lle is due to be executed at Wandsworth prison at S a.m. on Wednesday.
